Exactly what this tool assumes

Published so you can judge the output rather than trust it.

  • Your own bills are the baseline. The tool splits the amounts you enter into heating, water heating, and cooling portions using typical Ontario shares, then applies a conservative reduction range to the portion the upgrade can affect.
  • Square footage and the bedroom and bathroom counts are used only as small bounded adjustments to that split, never as a substitute for your bills. Floor area moves the heating and cooling portion by no more than ten per cent, and the bedroom and bathroom counts move the water-heating portion by no more than fifteen per cent.
  • Your current system and its age set both the upgrades offered and the width of the range. Equipment under five years old is not offered a like-for-like replacement, and older equipment is given more headroom than newer equipment.
  • The postal code only confirms an Ontario-style format and records the broad location you entered. It does not add weather precision or a local energy price to the calculation.
  • Ranges are conservative operating-cost ranges for planning conversations, rounded to the nearest $10. They are not quotes, savings guarantees, or predictions for your specific home.
  • Energy prices are assumed to stay at the level implied by the amounts you enter. Rate changes move every figure here.
  • Nothing here accounts for the purchase or installation cost of equipment, financing cost, or maintenance, and no rebate or incentive amount is included.
  • Insulation, air sealing, window condition, ductwork, and how you use the thermostat all change the result. Those are assessed at your home, not in a calculator.
  • Nothing you enter is sent anywhere. The calculation runs in your browser and is not saved.

Not a quote, and not a guarantee

We publish ranges rather than a single number because a single number would imply a precision nobody has before seeing the house. Your real figure depends on the building, the equipment selected, and energy prices at the time.
